JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position completes all bookkeeping, accounting, and finance functions at a mid-sized Chicago nonprofit, and supports the operational bridge between the HR consulting organization and High Jump. The Senior Accounting and Finance Manager (SAFM) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and ensures the accuracy of the organization's books and financial tools in order to allow for the CEO and the Board of Directors to fulfill their fiduciary duties. The SAFM must be a proactive problem solver and enjoy working within an entrepreneurial environment that is committed to equity, mission-driven, and student oriented. The ideal individual will have excellent collaboration skills, proven operational management success in developing and implementing new HR and/or accounting initiatives. The SAFM will directly manage all vendors and vendor contracts that fall underneath their areas of responsibility.

POSITION STATUS:  

This is a half-time position in a hybrid work environment. At a minimum, the SAFM will work one day in office per week, and will work the remainder of their week in the environment that best matches their daily responsibilities. Annual salary range of $45,000 - $50,000, based on experience and credentials. 

QUALIFICATIONS:    

Minimum of three years in accounting with a preference for at least one year in nonprofit accounting. CPA licensure preferred. Proficiency in Quickbooks, Microsoft Excel, and Google Products. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner to the CEO, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; oversee all financial tools and projects/programs and grants accounting. 
  • Coordinate and support the annual audit process alongside an external audit firm.  Assist external firm with 990 preparation support.  
  • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep Senior Leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting, maintain the G/L by setting up new accounts.
  • Support the Advancement Team through the booking of cash gifts, process and tracking of pledges, and reconciling gift accounts.
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts and manage all staff credit cards. 
  • Monitor and approve bi-monthly payroll in collaboration with the PEO.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies, expense management and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual. 
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with –  programmatic and fundraising colleagues.
  • Work closely and transparently with PEO on benefits, staffing/HR, compliance, and payroll. Connect the workflows of PEO and hiring teams to expedite onboarding.
  • Manage the processes for all onboarding and offboarding of full (14) and part time staff (104).
  • Oversee and execute the day to day accounting functions for the organization.
  • Manage accounts payable invoicing.  Provide the CEO with a weekly A/P report including cash balance and anticipated cash needs.
  • Create quarterly forecasts for the organization of revenue and expenses including variance analysis.
