The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE (Limited Term Employee) Wildlife Biologist at our Service Center in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.

Position Summary

This position will focus on public outreach and disease sampling in the assigned CWD surveillance area. Duties will include working with DNR staff and conservation partners to facilitate sampling of hunter harvested deer in the assigned work area. This position will serve as the lead coordinator for CWD outreach efforts. This position will also coordinate with other CWD Biologists in the District, the CWD sampling center in Poynette and with the local Wildlife Biologists and Technicians.

60% Coordinate the collection of deer tissue samples in the targeted surveillance area to provide hunter service testing in the assigned Area. Develop and maintain a network of cooperative stations and self-service kiosks to collect CWD samples. Provide those cooperators with necessary equipment and training. Monitor and ensure quality control of data from all CWD samples collected within the assigned area. Perform tissue extraction following all lab and safety protocols.

20% Coordinate and participate in weekly and monthly planning sessions with local and District DNR staff. Continually seek to modify operations to reduce costs and create efficiencies for customers and internal operations.

15% Procure materials and supplies necessary for CWD sampling, determine needs for specialized equipment, write up specifications for purchase, locate vendors and obtain supplies by purchase or rental.

5% Complete core Wildlife Management Program duties as assigned.

Salary Information

This position pays between $17.00-18.00 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 15-04. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual
  • Computer and software skills (MS Office)


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Understanding of deer biology and CWD transmission and testing protocols.
  • Ability to work irregular shifts including occasional nights and weekends.
